Dog Days Moxibustion

As the Greater Heat (Dashu) solar term approaches, marking the last solar term of summer, the persistent high temperatures become unbearable. This period also coincides with the "Sanfutian" (dog days of summer) in traditional Chinese medicine, which is divided into the beginning, middle, and end phases, representing the hottest time of the year. During Sanfutian, both nature and the human body's yang energy are at their peak. The body is particularly prone to internal heat, excessive sweating, which can affect spleen and stomach function, leading to discomfort, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

Many people opt for Moxibustion therapy during Sanfutian. Following the "unity of heaven and man" theory of traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion is performed during the hottest time of the year by applying Chinese herbal patches to various acupoints to achieve the goal of "treating winter diseases in summer." Moxibustion can improve conditions of qi deficiency and yang deficiency in the body, thereby alleviating menstrual discomfort in women and some chronic respiratory diseases.

Besides moxibustion, you can also use tea therapy at this time to strengthen your constitution. Prepare 2 slices of licorice, 1 piece of dried tangerine peel, and 3 slices of ginger. After washing the ingredients with water, steep them in hot water for 15 minutes and then drink. This tea helps replenish the body's yang energy, achieving the effect of strengthening the body and enhancing overall health.

Licorice, with its sweet taste and neutral nature, enters the heart, lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It can tonify the spleen and replenish qi, clear heat and detoxify, resolve phlegm and stop cough, relieve spasms and pain, and harmonize medicinal properties.

Dried tangerine peel, with its pungent taste and warm nature, enters the lung and spleen meridians. It can regulate qi and invigorate the spleen, dry dampness and resolve phlegm, and nourish and regulate.

Ginger, with its pungent taste and warm nature, enters the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It can warm the lungs and stop cough, induce sweating to release the exterior, and can treat colds caused by wind-cold, spleen and stomach deficiency cold, or disharmony of stomach qi.
