Secrets of Constipation

"My daughter can't poop, and she's crying because she's so uncomfortable." This is a real-life situation from a friend's two-year-old daughter. Only after becoming a mother did I understand the classic line from a milk powder commercial back in the day: "Are your poops as good as your daughter's?"

Constipation is a secret many find hard to talk about, yet it's one of the most common urban ailments. Constipation mainly occurs when the large intestine's conduction function is abnormal, causing stool to stay too long, and water from the stool is absorbed, making it difficult to pass. To have regular bowel movements, besides eating enough fiber and drinking enough water, you should also do appropriate exercise to help intestinal peristalsis. When constipated, you can brew tea with the following ingredients as needed:

1. Cassia Seed (Jue Ming Zi): Cold in nature, bitter in taste. It can clear the liver, improve vision, relieve constipation, promote urination, and lower blood pressure. Brew about one tablespoon of cassia seeds to drink. It can help soften stool. This tea is suitable for people with high blood pressure or a hot body constitution.

2. Lotus Leaf (He Ye): Neutral in nature, bitter in taste. It has the effect of dispelling dampness, eliminating edema, and clearing the bowels to relieve constipation. Lotus leaf contains a large amount of fiber, which can promote intestinal peristalsis, thereby achieving the effect of relieving constipation and flattening the abdomen. Cut a quarter of a lotus leaf into pieces and brew as tea. This tea is milder and suitable for people with edema.

3. Peach Blossom (Tao Hua): Neutral in nature, sweet in taste. It has the effects of beautifying the complexion, invigorating blood, and relieving constipation. Legend has it that Yang Guifei, the most beautiful woman of the Tang Dynasty, drank peach blossom tea daily. For constipation, you can brew about five peach blossoms as tea when needed. Use with caution for people with weak spleen and stomach.

4. Fig (Wu Hua Guo): Neutral in nature, sweet in taste. It can moisten the lungs to stop coughing, strengthen the stomach, and clear the bowels. Cut two figs into pieces and brew as tea; children can also drink it. Not suitable for people with diabetes.

If you don't want to spend all day in the bathroom, try squatting. You can use a short stool to elevate your feet. When we squat, the anus and rectum can align in a straight line, and the anal muscles relax, making it more effective. Solving constipation is not a one-day affair; the fundamental solution is to change diet and lifestyle habits.
