Resolve phlegm and regulate qi

During the pandemic, even though everyone wears masks, the sound of a nearby cough still causes people to scatter in fear. Changes in weather often trigger coughs, and coughs caused by excessive phlegm are even harder to cure.

When a cough is caused by excessive phlegm, you can brew a cup of Radish Seed and Ginger Tea. Use eight grams of radish seeds and three slices of ginger, add hot water, and steep in a thermos for 20 minutes before drinking.

Radish seeds, also known as "Luobuzi" or Semen Raphani, are pungent and sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and act on the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians. They are the seeds of the radish plant, a member of the mustard family. They are harvested when the fruit is mature, sun-dried, then threshed to extract the seeds, which are cleaned of impurities and sun-dried again. They regulate qi and resolve phlegm, calm asthma and relieve coughs. They are mainly used to treat constipation, food stagnation with abdominal distension, gastrointestinal stagnation, indigestion, belching with acid regurgitation, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and cough and asthma due to wind-phlegm.

Studies have shown that radish seeds have blood pressure-regulating effects, making them very suitable for the elderly. "Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "The efficacy of radish seeds excels in regulating qi. When raw, they ascend; when cooked, they descend. When ascending, they expel wind-phlegm, dispel wind-cold, and promote eruptions; when descending, they calm phlegm-asthma and coughs, regulate dysentery with tenesmus, and stop internal pain, all of which are effects of regulating qi."

Ginger is pungent in taste, warm in nature, and acts on the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It warms the lungs and relieves coughs, induces sweating, and releases the exterior. It can treat colds due to wind-cold, spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, or disharmony of stomach qi.

If the elderly or children have constipation or cough with excessive phlegm, and abdominal distension due to food stagnation, radish seeds can be used to cook porridge for consumption.

Note: This tea consumes qi. It is not suitable for those with qi deficiency, no food stagnation, or no phlegm stagnation, nor should it be used with ginseng.
