Cold weather causes back pain

Lower back pain is a common urban ailment, especially this year with people exercising less outdoors. Excluding pre-existing injuries or conditions, in addition to rheumatic lower back pain often triggered by rainy weather, temperature can also affect lower back pain. When the weather is cold, lower back pain can become particularly severe, even causing numbness in the legs. From the perspective of Qi and blood, pain signifies blockage; stagnation of Qi and blood stasis leads to lower back pain. Therefore, when the weather is cold, the circulation of Qi and blood in the body slows down, easily aggravating lower back pain.

The "Huangdi Neijing" (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine) states: "The lower back is the abode of the kidneys; if it cannot move freely, the kidneys are failing." This illustrates that the strength of the kidneys is key to lower back health. The kidneys govern the bones, and only with sufficient kidney essence can the bones be nourished by marrow, which is beneficial for the generation of blood. The lower back is an important hub of the human body, much like a traffic intersection in the body, with the limbs being like roads. If the intersection is blocked, it will affect traffic throughout the entire body.

To nourish the kidneys and protect the lower back, you can brew 3 grams of Eucommia leaves and 5 grams of Schisandra berries with hot water for 10 minutes. This tea helps strengthen the body and bones, nourish the liver and kidneys, and relieve lower back pain.

Eucommia leaves are sweet in taste, warm in nature, and enter the liver and kidney meridians. They have various effects, including nourishing the liver and kidneys, strengthening muscles and bones, lowering blood pressure, promoting blood circulation, improving edema-type obesity, and accelerating metabolism.

Schisandra berries are sour with a hint of sweetness, warm in nature, and enter the lung, heart, and kidney meridians. They can nourish the five internal organs, primarily by nourishing the kidneys, astringing the lungs, nourishing the heart, protecting the liver, promoting the production of body fluids and vital energy, and stopping sweating and astringing essence.

In addition to tea therapy and exercise, when it's cold, you can apply a hot towel or hot water bottle to the lower back. This helps accelerate blood circulation in the lower back, reduce congestion, and alleviate lower back pain caused by cold weather.
