Xiaoxue: Clear heat.

The Xiao Xue (Minor Snow) solar term has arrived, reminding us that it's time to protect ourselves from the cold and keep warm.

As we all know, winter is a good season for tonifying the body. However, there's still no sign of cold weather, the summer heat hasn't completely dissipated, and temperatures occasionally reach 30 degrees Celsius. After the dryness of autumn and the heat of summer, the body has accumulated a lot of internal heat. If this internal heat cannot dissipate, and hot-natured foods like barbecue and hot pot are consumed, it can easily lead to excessive internal heat, causing oral ulcers, acne on the cheeks, constipation, and bad breath. Before attempting to tonify and nourish the body, it's crucial not to overlook clearing heat and reducing qi when internal and external heat persists.

Excessive body heat not only has physical effects but also impacts mood, leading to irritability, insomnia, and in some individuals, symptoms of depression. We recommend drinking Jasmine Mulberry Heat-Clearing Tea. Steep 2 grams each of mulberry leaves and jasmine flowers in hot water for 5 minutes and then drink. This tea can clear the heart and reduce fire, eliminate heat and dispel yang, and pacify liver yang.

Mulberry leaves are sweet in taste, cold in nature, and enter the Lung and Liver meridians. They can pacify liver yang and relieve cough due to lung heat and dryness. Jasmine flowers are pungent and sweet in taste, warm in nature, and enter the Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. They can refresh the mind, calm the nerves and benefit qi, clear the liver and improve eyesight, and clear heat and detoxify.

With the renewed outbreak of COVID-19 and influenza, everyone should avoid rushing to tonify the body and consume hot-natured foods. Instead, it's advisable to first clear internal heat to prevent symptoms of "getting angry" such as cough and sore throat. You can also eat more bitter foods to relieve heat, dispel fire, and clear heat while moistening dryness. Only after the accumulated heat in the body has been cleared should you proceed with gentle tonification to allow the body to absorb nutrients more easily.
