Peaceful medicine

After the official quarantine-free border reopening, almost all fever and cold medicines on the market were snapped up. Even outside of a pandemic, many people likely have a habit of stocking up on common household medicines like painkillers, fever reducers, and cold remedies, just in case.

However, the best medicine is a strong immune system. The "Huangdi Neijing" (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) once stated, "When vital energy is present within, evil cannot interfere," meaning that if the human body has sufficient resistance, it can combat the invasion of disease. Especially in this cold weather, if one's yang energy is insufficient and resistance is weak, it is easy to trigger illnesses such as colds and wind-cold.

If you unfortunately catch a cold, you can easily prepare 10 grams of cassia twig (Guizhi) and 5 grams of processed licorice root (Zhigancao). After washing the ingredients, put them into a thermos, add hot water, and steep for 20 minutes before drinking. You can brew it 2 or 3 times; boiling it directly will yield even better results.

This tea recipe originates from the first formula in the "Shanghan Lun" (Treatise on Cold Damage) from the Eastern Han Dynasty. It can alleviate discomfort caused by wind-cold type colds and has a bidirectional regulatory effect, helping the body adjust internally and externally, as well as balance Yin and Yang. Therefore, it has been widely used since ancient times. When cassia twig and licorice root are used together, they warm and nourish qi, calm the heart, and are particularly effective for those with shortness of breath, palpitations, and excessive sweating.

Cassia twig is pungent and sweet in flavor, warm in nature; it enters the heart, lung, and bladder meridians; it can harmonize ying and wei qi, induce sweating to relieve muscle stiffness, warm the meridians and unblock blood vessels, and assist in warming yang and transforming qi. It is suitable for people with cold hands and feet, spleen and stomach deficiency cold, or those in the early stages of a wind-cold type cold. Licorice root is sweet in flavor, neutral in nature; it enters the heart, lung, spleen, and stomach meridians; it can tonify the spleen and boost qi, clear heat and detoxify, resolve phlegm and stop cough, relieve spasm and pain, and moderate the toxicity of other herbs.
