Emotional heatstroke

As the last solar term of summer, Major Heat, approaches, it marks the hottest season of the year. Even if you don't get heatstroke when going out, wearing a mask in the current climate can easily lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and irritability, as if your emotions are suffering from heatstroke along with the hot weather.

The humidity and heat of Major Heat can have adverse effects on both a person's physiology and psychology. The summer heat primarily damages the body's vital fluids. Pores are expanded at high temperatures, making it easy for bodily fluids to be lost through the pores, and it also depletes qi. A person's emotions can also easily become anxious, irritable, lose appetite, and feel restless.

To combat the scorching summer, you can brew a tea with three grams each of Lophatherum gracile and chrysanthemum. Just add hot water and steep for 5 minutes. This tea can relieve heat, clear the mind, and ease烦躁 (agitation).

Lophatherum gracile has a sweet taste and cold nature, and it targets the heart, stomach, and small intestine meridians. It can clear the heart, relieve agitation, and promote urination.

Chrysanthemum has a sweet and bitter taste with a slightly cold nature, and it targets the lung and liver meridians. It can dispel wind and clear heat, detoxify and reduce swelling, soothe the liver and improve vision, and suppress hyperactive liver yang.

During the Major Heat solar term, avoid strenuous exercise and excessive activity. You should replenish fluids frequently, drinking small amounts of water multiple times. Drinking large amounts of water only when thirsty can harm the spleen and stomach.

A calm mind naturally feels cool. The hotter the weather, the more important it is to remain peaceful and avoid getting angry. The busier life gets, the more important it is to learn to empty your mind, reset your inner self, and slow down and quiet down to absorb new things.

Take more time to rest. A 15-minute nap after meals can help you recharge.
