Save your eyes

Two weeks ago, I noticed my vision becoming blurry when looking at my phone up close. Worried it might be presbyopia at such a young age, I immediately went for an eye exam. Luckily, it was a false alarm; it was just a vision adjustment, and my myopia had decreased.

Blurred vision, dry eyes, and red eyes are no longer "exclusive" to old age. According to surveys, Hong Kong adults spend 3.7 hours daily online for non-work-related activities, which strains both eyes and body. Want to protect your eyes? It's recommended to nourish your liver first.

The "Golden Cabinet True Teachings" and "Plain Questions" chapters of the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon both state, "The orifices open into the eyes, and the essence is stored in the liver" and "Blood returns to the liver, and when the liver receives blood, one can see." This simply explains the close relationship between the liver and the eyes. Many eye problems ultimately originate from the liver. The liver is mainly responsible for疏泄 (dispersing and regulating). Insufficient liver blood can lead to the eyes not being nourished, causing dry eyes and blurred vision. Additionally, an upward flaming of liver fire or stagnated liver qi can easily cause red, swollen, and painful eyes; while hyperactivity of liver yang can lead to blurred vision and dizziness.

You can regularly brew a tea with goji berries (15 berries), mulberries (5 berries), and chrysanthemums (5 flowers). Regular consumption of this tea can protect the eyes and nourish the liver. Goji berries and mulberries both have the effect of improving vision and nourishing liver blood, while chrysanthemums can further clear the liver and brighten the eyes. Goji berries, in particular, contain various essential amino acids and trace elements. The "Journal of Nutrition" has even published experimental evidence demonstrating that goji berries can significantly improve dry eye conditions.

Eye care and liver nourishment should start young. What impressed me most was a friend making goji berry sushi for her one-year-old daughter, using steamed goji berries as a filling—both creative and nutritious. You might also consider incorporating goji berries into your cooking more often, such as in steamed meat or porridge, which are good choices.
