Vocal Cord Restoration Tea Remedy

Many people have experienced hoarseness from vocal overuse, and in severe cases, even loss of voice. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, "the lungs are the gate of the voice, and the kidneys are the root of the voice." The voice originates from the lungs and is emitted through the pharynx, stemming from the spleen and rooted in the kidneys. If there is a deficiency of lung and kidney yin, the throat may lack sufficient fluid to lubricate it, leading to aphonia; the kidneys govern the intake of qi, so if kidney qi is insufficient, the voice will not be strong enough.

When vocal overuse leads to loss of voice, you can brew 3 sterculia seeds and 2 slices of licorice with hot water for 10 minutes and then drink it. This tea can clear the throat, relieve cough and phlegm, and moisturize the intestines for bowel movements. However, it is not suitable for individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, common cold due to wind-cold, diabetes, or low blood pressure. Since sterculia seeds have medicinal properties, it is recommended to drink one cup daily when needed, and stop after symptoms improve. Generally, it should not be consumed for more than 3 to 5 days.

Sterculia seeds are sweet in taste, cold in nature, and enter the lung and large intestine meridians. They are often used for symptoms such as hoarseness due to lung heat, sore throat, acute tonsillitis, and dry cough without phlegm. They can clear and disperse lung heat, benefit the throat, detoxify, and moisten the intestines for bowel movements.

Licorice is sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and enters the heart, lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It can clear heat and detoxify, resolve phlegm and stop cough, replenish qi, and harmonize medicinal properties. It has anti-inflammatory effects and can protect inflamed pharyngeal mucosa.

If hoarseness is caused by coughing with thick phlegm, you can drink mulberry leaf and chrysanthemum tea. Prepare 5 grams each of mulberry leaves and chrysanthemums, and brew them as tea.

This tea can clear the lungs and detoxify, disperse wind and clear heat, and has anti-inflammatory effects, which can relieve dry mouth and hoarseness.
