Spring drowsiness, summer fatigue, autumn naps, winter slumber

Have you recently been feeling very tired and reluctant to get out of bed in the mornings? The change in temperature that comes with the changing seasons, coupled with the increased daylight hours, requires the body's physiological and psychological states to adjust. This can lead to fatigue and drowsiness, a phenomenon known as "spring fatigue." The eight-character phrase "spring fatigue, summer lassitude, autumn drowsiness, winter hibernation" simply summarizes the different effects that seasonal changes have on the human body.

In spring, the body needs proper rest and warmth because spring is a season of growth, and the body's yang energy increases. Without proper protection, this can lead to fatigue and physical discomfort, weakening the body's ability to resist spring fatigue. In summer, the intense sunlight requires attention to sun protection and heat relief; excessive depletion of the body's yang energy can lead to fatigue and weakness.

Autumn is the season for viruses to proliferate, so it's important to boost immunity, and the body also strengthens itself to cope with the coming cold winter, hence the fatigue. Winter is cold and the season that requires the most rest to preserve the body's yang energy. Without proper protection, the body's yang energy can weaken due to the cold, making one susceptible to colds and illnesses.

The "Huangdi Neijing" (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine) states that spring fatigue is mainly caused by an imbalance of yin and yang. When yin and yang are imbalanced, the body's normal functions are disrupted, leading to physical fatigue, drowsiness, and low mood. Therefore, it is recommended to adjust the balance of yin and yang to maintain the body's physiological and psychological equilibrium, which can improve spring fatigue. It is suggested to drink jasmine tea, which helps refresh the mind, soothe the nerves, regulate qi, clear the liver and improve eyesight, clear heat and detoxify, and maintain stable emotions.
