Loquats prevent autumn dryness

Today marks the White Dew solar term, the third solar term of autumn. It is named "White Dew" because as nighttime temperatures drop rapidly, moisture easily condenses into clear, crystal-like dew, which appears white.

As temperatures shift and humidity decreases in autumn, it's common to experience dry mouth, sore throat, dry and itchy nasal passages, and even nosebleeds. The lungs are connected to the mouth and nose, prefer moisture, and dislike dryness, making them particularly vulnerable to dry evil. At this time, it's not advisable to over-supplement too early; instead, focus on nourishing yin and moistening dryness.

When feeling a dry and itchy throat, many Hong Kong people turn to loquat paste for relief.

In fact, the entire loquat plant is valuable, especially for consumption in autumn. Loquat leaves are a main ingredient in loquat paste and can clear heat from the lungs and stomach. The loquat fruit is named after its resemblance to the Chinese musical instrument, the pipa. Loquat fruit can be stewed into a dessert soup to moisten the lungs and quench thirst. Loquat flowers are the most convenient to consume; simply brew them.

Loquat flowers have a bitter taste and a slightly cold nature, acting on the lung and stomach meridians. They can clear and moisten the lungs, resolve phlegm and stop cough, and reduce stomach qi to relieve vomiting. They are rich in vitamins, can clear heat and detoxify, and alleviate the initial symptoms of a cold.

To prepare, place 10 grams of loquat flowers in a thermos cup, add hot water, and steep for 20 minutes before drinking. This tea is suitable for moistening the lungs in early autumn. If you experience throat discomfort, you can add a quarter of a monk fruit to enhance its effectiveness, clearing the lungs, benefiting the throat, and relieving cough.

If dryness causes nasal sensitivity, you can add 10 magnolia flower buds to relieve nasal congestion, runny nose, and headaches due to wind-cold.
