Sweating profusely
Last week's column mentioned that some people sweat less, or even not at all. Now let's talk about the other extreme: constant sweating. People with abnormal sweating should be aware that sweating isn't always a good thing, nor does it necessarily mean weight loss or fat burning. It could be a sign of yin deficiency and imbalance in the body, where it's unable to retain fluids. Insufficient body fluids can easily be accompanied by symptoms like dry mouth, dry tongue, and sore throat.
In the scorching summer, sweating helps regulate body temperature. Sweat is the fluid of the heart. Slight sweating can maintain the smooth flow of qi and blood, but excessive sweating can deplete fluids, harm blood, and damage the heart. Simply put, when external environmental factors are ruled out, frequent sweating during the day, especially when moving, is called "spontaneous sweating." Sweating during sleep at night, which stops upon waking, is called "night sweats."
Individuals with "spontaneous sweating" can brew a tea with 8 grams each of floating wheat, Ophiopogon japonicus, and Poria cocos. This tea can benefit qi, clear heat, stop sweating, and calm the heart and mind.
Floating wheat is sweet and cool, and acts on the heart meridian; it can clear heat, reduce excessive sweating, benefit qi, and nourish the heart. It is often used to treat spontaneous sweating or night sweats. Ophiopogon japonicus is sweet and slightly cold, and acts on the heart, lung, and stomach meridians; it can nourish yin, moisten the lungs, generate fluids, and reduce fire. Poria cocos is sweet and neutral, and acts on the heart and spleen meridians; it can strengthen the spleen, calm the mind, tonify the spleen, benefit the heart, promote diuresis, dispel dampness, and nourish the heart and mind.
Individuals with "night sweats" can brew a tea with 8 grams of floating wheat, 3 preserved plums, and 3 pitted jujubes.
Preserved plum is neutral in nature, sour and astringent in taste, and acts on the spleen, lung, and large intestine meridians; it can generate fluids, quench thirst, astringe the lungs, stop cough, and also reduce sweating and astringe the intestines to stop diarrhea. Jujube is sweet and warm, and acts on the spleen and stomach meridians; it can tonify the middle Jiao, benefit qi, nourish blood, and calm the mind.
