Lily nourishes yin and moisturizes the lungs.

July is the season for lilies to bloom. Walking through the Flower Market, the air is filled with fragrance, as if it's a world of lilies. In the past, I rarely bought lilies. I felt they had few petals but were very large, and they seemed a bit dominant and monotonous when placed in a vase. That was until I encountered double lilies. This variety of lily looks like several lilies overlapping, with 3 to 4 layers of petals, which adds a sense of layering. Plus, they can generally last for a week in water.

Lilies are also a common ingredient, but there are many types, and not all varieties are suitable for consumption. The edible parts are mainly the petals and stems.

The petals of lilies are often used to make tea, commonly in an orange-red color. Lily flowers taste sweet and slightly bitter, are slightly cold in nature, and enter the lung meridian. They can moisten the lungs to relieve cough, reduce fire, and calm the mind, which can help regulate chronic respiratory diseases and relieve yin deficiency cough. However, they are not suitable for those with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold or who are prone to diarrhea.

Preparation: Steep 5 dried lily flowers to make tea. Long-term consumption can help relieve chronic dry cough and improve sleep quality.

The white lilies bought in wet markets are the bulbous scales of the lily root, which are similar to a sphere. The bulb resembles an onion, and the individual pieces that are peeled off are called scales, which are also the edible parts.

Lilies taste sweet, are cold in nature, and enter the heart, lung, and stomach meridians. They can nourish yin and moisten the lungs, stop cough and reduce phlegm, ventilate the lungs and nourish yin, clear heat and promote diuresis, and calm the heart and mind. Simply boil a few fresh or dried lily petals with fresh snow pear and rock sugar for about 5 minutes to make a thirst-quenching and moisturizing drink suitable for all seasons.
