Preventing "hotness" from hotpot

Hong Kong people love to eat hotpot all year round, especially when celebrating happy occasions. It just so happened that yesterday was my mother's birthday, and although we didn't "pop champagne," we still wanted to gather for hotpot to celebrate on this joyous day.

When eating hotpot, the steam accelerates fluid loss from the body. In addition, the food is hot and often strongly flavored or even spicy, which can easily lead to mouth ulcers, swollen and painful gums, and even a sore throat. This can irritate the spleen and stomach, causing dysfunction, and leading to internal dryness and dampness-heat, resulting in what we call "heatiness."

To alleviate "heatiness" when eating hotpot, you can use 5 grams of Ophiopogon japonicus, 3 grams of chrysanthemum, and 3 grams of honeysuckle. After washing the ingredients, steep them in hot water for 15 minutes and then drink. It can also be consumed once cooled. This tea can promote body fluid production, nourish yin, clear heat, improve eyesight, reduce internal heat, relieve inflammation, and detoxify the intestines.

Ophiopogon japonicus has a sweet taste and slightly cold nature, acting on the heart, lung, and stomach meridians. It can nourish yin and moisten the lungs, promote body fluid production, and reduce fire. It is suitable for dry cough with phlegm, dry mouth and tongue, and cough due to yin deficiency with internal heat. Chrysanthemum has a sweet taste and slightly cold nature, and can calm the liver, improve eyesight, disperse wind, and clear heat. Honeysuckle has a sweet taste and cold nature, acting on the lung, stomach, and heart meridians; it can clear heat and detoxify, and disperse wind-heat.

To alleviate "heatiness" when eating hotpot is actually very simple. Remember to keep the air circulating, wait for the food to cool down a bit before eating, and pair it with some cooler-natured vegetables such as bok choy and spinach. Of course, spicy foods or soup bases should be avoided if possible.

Happy Birthday, Mom. I love you.
