A sudden cold

The weather has suddenly turned cold, making it easy to associate it with the common cold. In fact, cold weather itself does not cause a cold; colds are caused by viruses. When the weather is cold, the relative humidity in the air decreases, which can dry out the respiratory tract and irritate the throat, thereby lowering immunity and making one susceptible to a cold.

When feeling unwell with a cold, it is recommended to use 10g of perilla leaves and 5 slices of ginger, brew them in hot water for 15 minutes, and then drink. A slight sweat will occur after drinking. This can be consumed continuously for 3 to 5 days, and this tea is especially effective for the initial stages of a cold and an itchy throat.

Perilla has a pungent taste, a warm nature, and acts on the lung and spleen meridians. It can induce sweating to release the exterior, regulate qi and broaden the chest, warm the stomach and regulate the middle jiao, detoxify and reduce fever, and improve headaches and limb pain caused by wind-cold. Perilla leaves are also a common ingredient; when consuming cold and raw foods, we habitually pair them with perilla leaves, such as using perilla leaves to steam hairy crabs, and Japanese sashimi also uses perilla leaves as a garnish.

Ginger has a pungent taste, a warm nature, and acts on the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It can warm the lungs and stop coughing, induce sweating to release the exterior, and treat colds caused by wind-cold, spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, or disharmony of stomach qi. Besides drinking, ginger slices can also be used for foot soaks to stimulate acupoints. Consider soaking your feet in warm water (around 40 degrees Celsius) with some ginger slices about an hour after dinner. This helps promote blood circulation, warm the whole body, and aid in sleep.

During this period, many people are staying at home and reducing outings, but remember to maintain good air circulation and indoor humidity. When humidity is high, air particles are larger and more likely to stick to viruses and fall to the ground, making it harder for them to float in the air, which helps prevent the spread of viruses. Of course, also pay more attention to keeping your neck warm to avoid discomfort caused by cold wind irritating the throat.
