Typhoons and Rheumatism
Last week, Hong Kong uncharacteristically experienced two consecutive No. 8 typhoon signals and rainstorm warnings. We often hear elderly people say that when there's a typhoon and rain, their rheumatism acts up, causing backaches and joint pain. Joint or back pain is not necessarily rheumatism, and elderly people don't necessarily suffer from rheumatism; rheumatism is not exclusively for the elderly.
Rheumatism, also known as wind-cold-dampness impediment, is not only affected by the weather but becomes particularly noticeable when the weather changes. The "Bi Lun" (Treatise on Impediment) in "Huangdi Neijing - Su Wen" (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon - Basic Questions) states: "When wind, cold, and dampness combine, they form impediment. If wind predominates, it is 'moving impediment'; if cold predominates, it is 'painful impediment'; if dampness predominates, it is 'fixed impediment'." This means that when the body is weak and vital energy is insufficient, it is susceptible to invasion by wind, cold, and dampness pathogens. These pathogens accumulate in the joints, obstructing the body's meridians and impeding the circulation of qi and blood, leading to pain due to blockages.
Rheumatism sufferers can use 5g of Saposhnikovia root, 5g of Pubescent Angelica root, and 10g of coix seed. After washing all ingredients, place them in a thermos and steep them with hot water for 20 minutes before drinking. This tea has the effects of dispelling wind, detoxification, strengthening the spleen, and dispelling dampness, which helps improve joint pain.
Saposhnikovia root is pungent and sweet in flavor, slightly warm, and enters the bladder, liver, and spleen meridians. It can release the exterior and dispel wind, overcome dampness and relieve pain, stop spasms, and stop diarrhea.
Pubescent Angelica root is pungent and bitter in flavor, slightly warm, and enters the liver and bladder meridians. It can dispel wind and eliminate dampness, disperse cold and clear blockages, relieve the exterior and stop impediment pain, and is particularly effective for rheumatism and impediment pain in the lower body.
Coix seed is sweet and bland in flavor, slightly cold, and enters the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians. It can promote urination and drain dampness, strengthen the spleen, eliminate impediment, clear heat, and expel pus.
