Winter begins. Keep warm.
With the start of winter and a cold front, temperatures have dropped sharply, making it feel like winter has truly arrived.
Last weekend, I couldn't wait to take out my winter clothes from the wardrobe to welcome the season, as there are fewer and fewer days in Hong Kong when one can wear coats.
Lidong (Start of Winter) is the first solar term marking the beginning of winter. All living things begin to store up resources, preparing for spring next year. The key to winter is "storage." The body's yang energy also starts to converge inward, and metabolism begins to slow down.
Yang energy is rooted in the kidneys; the kidneys are the foundation of congenital essence and the source of life. Only with healthy kidneys can the body adjust to the cold winter; otherwise, metabolism will be affected, leading to easy coldness, fatigue, and susceptibility to colds. Therefore, the focus in winter should be on nourishing the kidneys, and the diet should be warming and tonifying.
To welcome winter, it's important to nourish the kidneys, replenish deficiency, and enhance the body's vital energy. You can drink Longan, Red Date, and Goji Berry Tea. Simply use 5 longans, 5 grams of goji berries, and two pitted red dates. Wash the ingredients, add hot water, and steep for 15 minutes before drinking. This tea can consolidate yin and strengthen yang, nourish blood, and warm the middle burner.
Longan is sweet in taste, warm in nature, and enters the heart and spleen meridians. It can stimulate appetite, strengthen the spleen, nourish blood, calm the mind, strengthen yang, and replenish qi.
Goji berries are sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and enter the liver and kidney meridians. They can replenish essence and blood, nourish the liver and improve eyesight, tonify the liver and kidneys, moisturize the lungs, replenish qi, and prevent blurred or declining vision.
Red dates are sweet in taste, warm in nature, and enter the spleen and stomach meridians. They can tonify the middle burner and replenish qi, nourish blood, and calm the mind. However, red date pits are rather heat-inducing and can easily cause internal heat, so it's recommended to remove the pits before consumption.
