Periods and Edema

Many women experience various pre-menstrual discomforts. Women ovulate approximately 400 to 500 times over their lifetime, lasting more than 30 years. If each month brings bloating, menstrual pain, dizziness, and other symptoms, it can be quite distressing.

Two weeks before menstruation, the ovaries secrete estrogen for ovulation and produce a large amount of progesterone. However, if the egg is not fertilized during ovulation, hormonal changes cause a decrease in endocrine secretion and progesterone levels, leading to the shedding of the uterine lining, which is then expelled as menstrual blood. Progesterone is a crucial estrogen for conception, but it is also a significant factor contributing to bloating during menstruation.

To prevent various menstrual discomforts, it is recommended to make a tea with Motherwort and roses. Simply use 10 grams of Motherwort and six roses, wash them, then place them in a thermos with hot water and steep for 15 minutes before drinking. You can also add an appropriate amount of brown sugar to reduce the bitterness. Drink one cup daily for a week before menstruation to help alleviate menstrual discomfort and reduce bloating.

Motherwort has a pungent taste, is slightly cold in nature, and acts on the kidney, liver, and heart meridians. As its name suggests, it is a very beneficial herb for women, excellent for regulating menstruation and nourishing yin. It can invigorate blood, dispel stasis, regulate menstruation, clear heat and detoxify, and promote diuresis and reduce swelling. Motherwort contains various trace elements that help combat fatigue and boost immunity. The "Compendium of Materia Medica" also records: Motherwort "invigorates blood, breaks up blood stasis, regulates menstruation, and detoxifies. It treats uterine bleeding during pregnancy, difficult labor, retained placenta, postpartum dizziness, blood-related wind conditions, blood pain, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, hematuria, bloody diarrhea, dysentery, hemorrhoids, internal injuries from falls and blows, blood stasis, and difficulty with bowel movements and urination." Note: Pregnant women should avoid it, and those with blood deficiency should use it with caution.

During menstruation, it is also important to pay extra attention to keeping warm. In terms of diet, it is best to avoid cold, sour, spicy, and stimulating foods.
