Scanty menstrual flow

A monthly period is like a barometer for a woman's body. Besides affecting mood, it can also reflect one's physical condition. High stress, poor mood, and illness can all affect menstruation. Many women, in addition to menstrual pain, are also troubled by delayed periods or excessively heavy or light flow.

A normal menstrual cycle is about 28 days, lasting about 3 to 7 days, with a total flow of about 50 to 150 ml, with the heaviest flow on the second day of menstruation. Menstrual blood is formed when the uterine lining, stimulated by hormones over approximately a 28-day cycle, gradually thickens. If no pregnancy occurs by the end of the cycle, it sheds to form menstrual blood, which is dark red and free of clots.

If the menstrual flow is too light, or if it is significantly delayed, you can steep 15 grams of motherwort in hot water for 10 minutes before your period, and add an appropriate amount of brown sugar before drinking. Please note that pregnant women and those with a cold spleen and stomach should avoid it.

Motherwort (Yi Mu Cao) has a pungent taste and a slightly cold nature, and it acts on the kidney, liver, and heart meridians. As its name suggests, it is a very beneficial ingredient for women, excellent for regulating menstruation and nourishing yin. It can invigorate blood and dispel stasis, regulate menstruation, clear heat and detoxify, and promote diuresis to reduce swelling. The Compendium of Materia Medica also states: "Motherwort invigorates and breaks up blood, regulates menstruation, and detoxifies. It treats threatened miscarriage, difficult labor, retained placenta, postpartum dizziness, blood wind, blood pain, metrorrhagia, metrostaxis, hematuria, bloody diarrhea, infantile malnutrition, dysentery, hemorrhoids, internal injuries from blows, blood stasis, and obstruction of bowel and urinary movements."

Brown sugar has a sweet taste and a warm nature, and it acts on the spleen, stomach, and liver meridians. It can tonify the middle burner and soothe the liver, harmonize the stomach and regulate qi, harmonize blood and dispel stasis, and regulate menstruation. It has a nourishing effect on women and the elderly who are frail, and is particularly suitable for women to drink during their period.
