Stubborn melasma

Every summer, many women take out sun hats and umbrellas to block the sun. My friend recently even plotted to add UV-protective film to her car windows.

Facial hyperpigmentation is the enemy of many women. There are various whitening and spot-removing products on the market, and laser and IPL treatments are emerging endlessly, but most of them only target freckles.

My friend never had spots on her face since childhood, but after giving birth to two children, the spots on her face became persistent. She even purchased two spot-removing treatments costing over ten thousand dollars each from different beauty salons, but because her spots were melasma, the results were futile.

Melasma is also known as chloasma. Many women experience changes in skin texture during pregnancy due to hormones, resulting in darker skin tone and even the appearance of melasma on their faces. In addition to being affected by UV rays which deepen the pigmentation, melasma can also be affected by one's physical condition and mood.

Melasma is more stubborn than other types of hyperpigmentation, as it reflects problems with the liver and kidneys. Most patients suffer from liver qi stagnation and insufficient essence and blood; chronic illness, insufficient rest, and anger can also damage the liver. Liver and kidney deficiency can easily lead to qi and blood not ascending to nourish the face, eventually forming melasma.

It is recommended to use 10 grams of Bupleurum root (Chai Hu) and steep it in hot water for 20 minutes to drink. Boiling it directly will yield even better results. Bupleurum root is bitter with a pungent taste, slightly cold in nature, and enters the liver and gallbladder meridians. It can soothe the liver and relieve stagnation, activate blood and dispel stasis, thereby lightening melasma.

In addition to applying sunscreen daily, avoid eating photosensitive foods such as celery, spinach, lemons, and oranges before sun exposure to reduce the impact of UV rays on the skin.
